“Of Tuaregs I had contradictory images - one of the mythical blue man,
lord of the desert, fascinating, but faceless, silent and anonymous, and another
reflecting a reality but only a part of it: only their misery.
So when Catherine,my sister-in-law, married Soueloum, these images
didn’t help me to approach his culture and the idea of making a film
about Tuaregs came immediately. But at the same time I wondered how.
And also if I was entitled to film a civilisation I know so little of.
Little by little we learnt to know each other better and the project changed.
It was no longer question of making a film about Tuaregs but with some people -
Tuaregs and Belgians - some I knew who lead me to others I didn't know.
As centre and link of this group portrait I chose Annor, Catherine-Zahra’s and
Soueloum’s son, who is now seventeen, belongs to both cultures and needs
to make them coexist harmoniously with their differences and their similitudes,
their oppositions and their links, and the image they have of each other.”
